Endgame Encore opens to $86 million and closes in on Avatar’s record

The re-release of Avengers: Endgame, with four new scenes that lead into Avengers: Doomsday, took $86 million worldwide in its first weekend and left the film about $39 million short of the all-time box office record.

What happened

Disney’s return of Avengers: Endgame to cinemas, billed as Avengers: Endgame Encore, took about $26 million in the US and Canada and a further $60 million elsewhere over its opening weekend, for a worldwide start of $86 million, according to Empire, /Film and Gizmodo.

Gizmodo reported that the domestic figure is the third-biggest opening ever for a reissue, behind the 1997 return of Star Wars at $35.9 million and the 3D version of The Lion King in 2011 at $30.2 million.

The record within reach

The weekend lifted the lifetime gross of the 2019 film to about $2.88 billion, up from roughly $2.79 billion before the re-release, /Film said. That leaves it just behind Avatar, which holds the all-time record at about $2.92 billion; Empire put the remaining gap at around $39 million. Gizmodo gave the new total as $2.885 billion.

Whether the Encore run closes that gap will depend on how well it holds in the coming weekends. None of the reports gave a forecast.

Why audiences came back

The draw is partly new material. The Encore adds four scenes written to set up Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in December: on December 16 in the UK, Empire said, and on December 18 in the US, according to Gizmodo. Gizmodo also noted that shaky phone recordings of the new footage spread online over the weekend.

/Film argued that the new scenes are only part of the story. It pointed to the lasting appeal of the original team of heroes, to nostalgia for a period when Marvel releases felt like events, in contrast with the studio’s weaker results in 2025, and to interest in Doomsday itself, whose advance ticket sales passed $50 million a hundred days before release. Gizmodo likewise described the turnout as driven by fondness for the original Avengers and for the years before the pandemic.

A scene only some viewers saw

Not every audience got all four scenes. Kotaku reported that one of them, set at the Time Variance Authority and featuring faces from the Loki series, was shown only on IMAX and Infinity Vision screens. That limit appeared in a Disney press release on August 25 but not, fans complained, anywhere at the cinema, and some who saw the standard version said they felt misled.

Kotaku quoted viewers objecting to extra footage being held back on a film that is now seven years old, and parents who said their children had missed a scene they came for.
