Spider-Man: Brand New Day is headed back to cinemas with footage cut from its first run

What happened

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, already the biggest film ever released in North America, is set to return to cinemas in an extended version, Deadline reported on September 28. Empire, Collider and Gizmodo all followed the report, which says the new cut will add material that did not make the film when it opened.

The one addition the reports agree on is a set of scenes with Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, the nurse she first played in Marvel’s Netflix series. Empire noted that Deadline expects more surprises in the extra footage without saying what they are. Collider suggested that brief appearances by smaller villains could be among them, and Gizmodo floated further guesses; none of these has been confirmed.

The numbers behind it

The film has earned about $950.7 million in the US and Canada and close to $2.5 billion worldwide, Collider reported. Gizmodo said it recently passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the top domestic release ever, and is now around $50 million short of being the first film to reach $1 billion in that market alone. Empire described it as the third-biggest release worldwide of all time.

The timing also follows a strong test of the idea. Collider and Gizmodo both tied the plan to Avengers: Endgame Encore, the re-release of the 2019 film with extra scenes, which took $86 million globally in its opening weekend.

When, and how certain

No date has been announced, and neither Sony nor Marvel has confirmed the plan, Empire said, noting that the report rests on unnamed sources. Empire expects the release before Avengers: Doomsday opens in the UK on December 16. Gizmodo gave a wider window, anywhere between Doomsday this December and Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.

Gizmodo pointed to a precedent: Spider-Man: No Way Home came back to cinemas as an extended edition about eight months after it first opened.
